Steam Shower Doors in Cincinnati, OH

Steam shower doors have to hold steam in, not just keep water off the floor, so the glass, seals and hardware are planned differently from a regular shower. This page is for Cincinnati-area homeowners adding a steam shower, or fixing one whose door no longer seals.

What makes steam shower doors different

A regular shower door can leave a gap at the top. A steam shower can't. Mr. Steam, a steam generator maker, says a steam shower must be installed in an enclosed, water- and vapor-tight space, and ThermaSol's installation manual calls for a vapor-proof door that seals well so steam does not escape.

In practice, that means the glass usually runs to the ceiling, with a fixed panel or header sealing the top, and the door closes against seals on all sides. The enclosure is part of the steam system, so the glass gets planned alongside the generator, tile and ceiling, not after them.

Sealing everything changes the hardware too: the door, the hinges and the seals live in heat and moisture every session.

Steam shower transom and venting

A steam shower transom is a hinged glass panel at the top of the enclosure. Dulles Glass, a shower glass maker, describes it as the way to control temperature and moisture: open it to release heat and steam, close it to keep steam in. It also notes the transom must clear anything mounted on the ceiling when it swings open.

ThermaSol suggests a transom window or an exhaust fan outside the enclosure to manage moisture after use. Mr. Steam says there should be no heating, venting or air-conditioning components inside the steam room, and that an exhaust fan should be mounted outside the shower.

Ceiling height, slope and door swing

Ceiling slope. ThermaSol notes that a sloped ceiling helps prevent condensation from dripping during a session. That slope affects how the top of the glass is cut and sealed.

Ceiling height. Makers differ here. Mr. Steam's guidance is a minimum of 7 ft. and a maximum of no more than 8 ft. Steamist says ceiling height should not exceed 8 ft. for optimum performance, with 10 ft. as the maximum. Because of differences like this, enclosure requirements depend on the steam generator maker's instructions for your unit.

Glass and generator size. Glass walls change how much generator you need. Steamist's and ThermaSol's sizing charts both multiply room volume by 1.35 for glass block or all-glass tile walls.

Door swing and steam head. Dulles Glass notes hinged shower doors open outward under IRC P2708.1. Mr. Steam says to place the steam head away from the door, and not where direct steam would hit the door seals, because that deteriorates them.

Steam shower installation: who does what

A steam shower installation involves several trades. The glass enclosure is glass work. The steam generator is not.

Mr. Steam's manuals say plumbing must be done by a qualified plumber and electrical wiring by a qualified licensed electrician under national and local codes. Steamist notes generator voltage must match your home's service (208 or 240 volt). Tile, waterproofing and the sloped ceiling come before the glass.

The glass is measured last, after tile, because the enclosure has to seal to the finished surfaces. If you are planning a steam shower, loop in the glass early so the opening, curb and ceiling are built with a sealed door in mind.

Options for a frameless steam shower door

  • Layout. Common setups are a single door, a door with a fixed panel, or a door and panel with a transom above.
  • Frameless steam shower door. Heavy glass with seals along the edges and a sweep at the bottom. The hinges must be rated for the door's weight and width (see hinge repair for how ratings work).
  • Steam shower enclosure to the ceiling. Fixed glass above the door, or an operable transom, closes the top.
  • Hardware finish. Pick a finish you can clean with a mild cleaner, since steam rooms see more condensation and mineral spotting than a regular shower.

For general frameless options, see frameless shower doors and glass shower panels.

Steam shower repair: when the door stops sealing

Most steam shower door repair is about seals and hinges. Heat and moisture age seals faster, and Mr. Steam specifically warns that direct steam on door seals makes them deteriorate. Once a seal shrinks or cracks, steam leaks around the door and the room takes longer to fill.

Hinges on a steam door work hard: heavy glass, constant humidity and, here, hard water. A door that sags even slightly will stop sealing. Common fixes are new seals and sweeps, re-hanging or adjusting the door, and replacing worn or corroded hinges.

If the problem is the steam itself (no steam, weak steam, error codes), that is the generator and belongs with a plumber, electrician or the manufacturer's service network.

The Cincinnati factor and what to have ready

Cincinnati water is moderately hard, roughly 7 to 8 grains per gallon on average at the Greater Cincinnati Water Works plants (approximate figure, as reported by Culligan citing GCWW). In a steam room, condensation dries on glass and hardware after each session, so a squeegee and regular wipe-down matter more than in a standard shower. ThermaSol's manual also recommends an in-line water filter on the generator's supply, which is plumbing work.

Common questions

Do steam showers need a special door?+

Yes. ThermaSol's manual calls for a vapor-proof door that seals well, and Mr. Steam says the space must be water- and vapor-tight. A standard shower door with an open top won't hold steam.

Does a steam shower need a transom?+

Not always, but it is a common choice. A transom lets you vent heat and moisture without opening the door, and ThermaSol lists a transom window or an outside exhaust fan as ways to manage moisture after use. Your generator maker's instructions are the final word.

How tall can a steam shower ceiling be?+

It depends on the generator maker. Mr. Steam recommends a 7 ft. minimum and no more than 8 ft. Steamist says 8 ft. for optimum performance with 10 ft. as the maximum. Taller rooms generally need a larger generator.

Why are my steam shower door seals failing?+

Heat and moisture wear seals faster than in a regular shower, and Mr. Steam warns that direct steam hitting the door seals makes them deteriorate. Hard water deposits and a sagging door also break the seal. New seals plus a door adjustment usually fix it.

Who installs the steam generator?+

Mr. Steam's manuals call for a qualified plumber for the plumbing and a qualified licensed electrician for the wiring. The glass installer handles the enclosure, door and transom.
